The Caatinga is Brazil’s only exclusively semi-arid biome, adapted to intense heat, seasonal drought and highly variable rainfall. Its native vegetation supports unique biodiversity, protects soils, regulates water and stores carbon. Restoring the Caatinga strengthens ecological resilience while protecting the natural resources on which local communities depend.

The Kariri-Xocó are an Indigenous people of the Lower São Francisco region, whose territory lies in Porto Real do Colégio and São Brás, Alagoas, along the São Francisco River. Their identity brings together Kariri and Xocó histories, with deep cultural and spiritual connections to the river, forests and traditional territory.

Why Caatinga Matters

The Caatinga is Brazil’s only exclusively semi-arid biome, adapted to intense heat, seasonal drought and highly variable rainfall. Its native vegetation supports unique biodiversity, protects soils, regulates water and stores carbon. Restoring the Caatinga strengthens ecological resilience while protecting the natural resources on which local communities depend.
