Why the São Francisco River Mangroves Matter
At the mouth of the São Francisco River, mangroves are a vital meeting point between river, sea and land. They provide nursery habitat for fish and wildlife, protect the coastline from erosion, store carbon, and support the livelihoods and cultures of local communities. Protecting these mangroves means protecting one of the region’s most important natural ecosystems—and the people who depend on it.

The Foz do Sao Francisco Tree Rescue Hub
Foz Tree Rescue Hub is one of 7 hubs developed by Guardians Worldwide. A Tree Rescue Hub is much more than a tree nursery: it is a seed bank, a tree hospital where we rescue damaged trees and monitor pests and disease, it is a cultural and social space and much more. At our Foz Hub we grow several species of trees native to the coastal and mangrove forests of Sergipe.

These are the 6 native trees we are growing at the Foz Tree Rescue Hub
Red Mangrove — A salt-tolerant coastal tree that stabilises shorelines and provides vital nursery habitat for fish and other wildlife. Rhizophora mangle
White Mangrove Laguncularia racemosa— A hardy mangrove tree that helps filter water, protect the coast and provide habitat for birds, fish and other species.
Black Mangrove Avicennia germinans— A coastal tree adapted to saline conditions, helping trap sediment and support the rich biodiversity of mangrove ecosystems.
Amescla Protium heptaphyllum— A native coastal forest tree that produces aromatic resin and provides food and shelter for wildlife.
Mama-de-cachorra Eugenia brejoensis— A native Brazilian tree found in coastal vegetation, producing fruits that contribute to local wildlife and forest diversity.
Jatobá Hymenaea courbaril— A large native forest tree known for its distinctive fruits and valuable role in providing food and habitat for wildlife.
