The Guardians of the River Retreat is a four-night immersive experience dedicated to river guardianship, cultural memory, and the personhood of water.

Set in central Portugal during spring, the retreat invites participants into a deep relationship with living rivers through swimming, walking, listening, singing, and learning from both ancient traditions and present-day cultural landscapes.

About

Zêzere River

The Zêzere is one of the most iconic rivers in Portugal — a swerving and serpentine water system born in Serra da Estrela, the country’s tallest mountain range. From its cold upland source, the river carves a winding path through the ridges, forests and deep valleys of Medio Tejo, until it finally joins the waters of the Tagus.

“Zêzere” is an ancient name, reaching back to pre-Roman times, and is thought to carry the simple, powerful meaning of “river” or “flow.” The word is onomatopoeic: it resembles the sound of gushing water.

The Zêzere was once a part of a sacred landscape of Iberian river cults devoted to Nabia, a goddess of springs, rivers and territorial guardianship. Her memory persists in local place names, including the Nabão River, a tributary of the Zêzere.

Participants will be introduced to the Portuguese tradition of singing from fountain to fountain (cantos e cantigas), a communal practice historically used to honour springs, mark territory, and maintain relationship with water sources.

Group sessions will involve walking, bathing, swimming, prayer and acknowledgments to river.

The retreat also draws on Aquilógio, an 18th-century Portuguese text that explores water sources, springs, flows, and protection of waters. Through guided readings and discussions, participants will explore how early Portuguese water stewards understood water morally, medicinally and culturally.
